Welcome Race Fans,

RACE RESULTS – SUPER STREET RACE #11
JRN RACING TAKES A WIN!

Greetings Race Fans, JRN Racing has taken our first win of the year and has assumed the points lead in the Super Street Division.

Randy has taken his first victory of the 2009 season with a great run this past Saturday night, September 19. We had worked and tweaked on the car during the week previous and it payed off. The car ran good all day, with the loose problem much much better. Practice times were decent, and Randy was able to qualify 3rd. Usually we have been starting second, which places us on the outside lane. This is hard to navigate early in the race when all the cars are bunched up, as the fast way around Langley is on the bottom of the track. It usually takes a lap or so to sort out the leaders and find an opening in traffic that allows us to get to the bottom.

We started the race out good, held our line, and ended up second after a lap or two. The leader was forced to park it with overheating issues early in the race. In the mean time, we battled with the third place car for our position for a few laps. Not wanting to be held up getting to the front, Randy passed the leader on the outside and assumed the top spot. Randy led the rest of the race. Our pucker factor was high though as we had a good lead midway through the race, only to have the caution flag fly. On the restart, Randy got a good start, cleared away from traffic, only to have the caution come out again a few laps later. Another good restart, and Randy led until lap 48, when the caution flew for the final time, setting up a green-white-checkered finish. On the final restart, Randy pulled away enough to maintain his lead to the checkered flag, and his first win for 2009.

The below is the race report from Gary Daugherty, the tracks reporter:

In the 50-lap Atlantic Power Sweeping Super Street race, Randy Sample took the lead on lap 13 and sped to his first victory of the year. He also took over the division points lead from nine-time race winner Ryan Nester, who was suspended for the remainder of the season after a brouhaha on Aug. 29.
Randy Akers was the pole-sitter for Saturday’s race, clocking in at 74.607 mph. He led the first four laps before officials spotted an obvious leak from his car and put out the black flag. Akers pulled into the pits on lap 5 and parked his machine for the night, turning the lead over to Jonathan Mullett, who had just taken second place from Sample.
By lap 11, Mullett and Sample had been joined by Larry Venable and Jeff Shannon, making it a four-pack at the head of the field.
On lap 13, Sample took a run to the outside of Mullett in Turn 1. He pulled even and grabbed the lead off the fourth corner. Within a couple laps, he had driven away by two lengths and the gap was growing.
Shannon, looking for his second straight win, picked off Venable for third on lap 19 and charged past Mullett on lap 20 to move into second. The shuffle allowed Sample to extend his lead to nearly half a straightaway.
The race was slowed by caution flags on laps 29 and 30. During the second caution period, Shannon suddenly made the hard turn onto the pit lane, spelling a premature end to his run. Shannon’s exit passed the runner-up position back to Mullett.
On the restart, Sample darted away from the field, while Mullett and Venable dueled for second. Sample enjoyed a five-length advantage when the third, and final, caution flag appeared on lap 49, setting up a “green-white-checkered” finish.
Under green for the last time, Sample eked out a one-length margin over Mullett, stretching it to two lengths as they reached the backstretch. He would maintain that edge to the finish, winning by 0.616-second. Mullett was second to the line, followed by Venable, John Foster Jr. and Rod Busitzky, who fought off Sean Calway at the line for fifth.
In the standings, Sample is up by 32 points over Nester, who only dropped to second. Mullett is third, 38 points behind the new leader.

As a result of this race finish, Randy inherents the points lead. We have two races left to finish the season out. We need to work hard, save up and buy tires each week, so we can best our chance of staying on top.

Jamie’s new car is well underway in construction. The chassis has been cleaned up and roll cage installation is in progress. Progress has been severely affected by work obligations of chief mechanic and crew chief Doug. With one month of racing left, our hope is to have it out by the seasons’ end is bleak. I know Jamie is chomping at the bit to get back in the car.

Our next race is this Saturday, September 26, 2009. Please come and join us.

Welcome Race Fans,

RACE RESULTS – SUPER STREET RACE #9 & 10 – WILD TIMES AT THE RACETRACK

Greetings Race Fans, JRN Racing has had a couple of wild weekends racing since our last report. Fortunately, we have come through these weekends no worse for the wear.

Our race on August 22 was a challenging day. Due to the USAR Pro Cup series racing with us the same night, qualifying for the Super Street Division was suspended and the best practice lap times were used to set the starting order. Unfortunately, we were fighting a very loose race car all day, and therefore our practice times were not stellar. We ended up qualifying 7th, but at least we were on an inside starting position. Soon after practice ended, the rains came and racing was ultimately cancelled until the following day.

The following Sunday, turned out to be a hot, muggy day to race. We were able to work on the car slightly and it helped a little. We finally got to race, but during the race the car was again way too loose. When our race was finally over, we pulled away with only a 7th place finish, our worst of the season. Much work was needed during the week to get the car better by the next weekend.

During the week, we made significant changes to the suspension in an effort to make the car turn better and not be so loose coming off the corners. On Saturday, August 29th, practice laps indicated we had gone in the right direction with the car. Although not perfect, we clicked off another 2nd place qualifying run at 19.226 seconds, only to be bested by the 51 car (who’s won every race so far this season) by .010 seconds.

The race though was a wild one that ended up taking out several top cars, including the 51 Car (points leader and winner of every race so far this season). Randy had a good start, but in Turn 3 on the first lap, got together with the inside car which got him out of shape, losing a few positions. He gathered it back together and started working on the cars ahead of him as the race continued. At lap 24, all heck broke loose. The leader (51) and second place car got together and both ended up in the outside wall in Turns 1/2. Randy was able to navigate through the carnage easily. The 51 car was severely damaged, and was leaking fuel and had sparks igniting the fuel on his way back to the pits. In the pits, flames caught up with the car and a serious fire ensued. It took the fire department time to put out the fire. In the mean time, tempers & fights flared as well in several places between the drivers, crew members, and fans. When it was all said and done, the 51 was out of the race due to damage, and the other car was able to keep going. On the restart, Randy started 4th. However, a few laps later, the car in the previous issue got together again with another car, causing the other car to loose control and spin out. The caution again flew during that issue and the race officials put both cars in the back on the restart. On the restart, those two got together again in Turn 1 and both ended up in the wall with damage. Tempers and fists flared again, and both drivers ended up out of the race.

Once we were able to go green again, Randy was able to drive to the front and was able to gain a second place finish in the end. The below is the race report from Gary Daugherty, the tracks reporter:

Jeff Shannon assumed the lead on lap 25 and showed the way to his first victory of the season in a raucous 50-lapper for the Atlantic Power Sweeping Super Streets. With Shannon’s win, Ryan Nester’s unbeaten streak ended at nine.
Nester began his quest for his 10th straight win from the pole position, qualifying at 74.001 mph. He grabbed the lead on backstretch on lap 1 and proceeded to pace the first 24 circuits.
Jeramie Wood started third and moved up to second on the opening lap. As Wood followed closely in Nester’s tire tracks, it quickly became apparent that the streak might be in some jeopardy.
After shadowing Nester for the first half of the event, Wood got a run on the leader on lap 25 and poked a fender underneath him at the flagstand. The two tangled into Turn 1 and both cars careened into the outside wall, bringing out the race’s second caution flag.
By far, Nester got the worst of the exchange, backing hard into the wall. He pulled away from the scene, a trail of flaming fuel in his wake. He headed to the pits where he was greeted by a fire truck and a host of fire extinguishers. As he rolled to a stop, the flames flared up, creating a scary sight.
While track workers, fire personnel and others were trying to douse Nester’s car, scuffles began to break out in the pits, along the backstretch (where Wood had stopped with the rest of the field) and in the stands as Nester and Wood supporters squared off.

When order was finally restored, the race resumed with Shannon as the new leader. He jumped out to a two-length advantage over John Pereira and began to ease away.
The third caution flag flew on lap 32 when Wood and John Foster Jr. tangled near the entrance to Turn 1 and Foster spun. Both drivers were sent to the back of the pack. They immediately resumed their tussle on the restart and both ended up in the Turn 1 wall, reigniting tempers.

After that dust-up, the eight remaining drivers got back down to the business of determining the race winner. Shannon, Pereira, Jonathan Mullett, Randy Sample and Dale Parro made up the top five for the restart.

Back under green, Shannon managed a narrow margin over Pereira. He gained a little more breathing room on lap 40 as Mullett moved up to challenge for the runner-up spot. On the following circuit, though, Mullett gave way to Sample. Four laps later, Sample picked off Pereira for second.

While positions changed hands in his mirror, Shannon bolted to a half-straightaway lead and looked to be on his way to an easy win. On this night, though, nothing would be easy as caution #5 waved on lap 48 for a tangled involving Mullett and Sean Calway.

Shannon got a tremendous break on the restart when Pereira went after Sample for second place. With those two battling door-to-door, Shannon set sail and won by 1.491 seconds. Sample nipped Pereira at the line for the runner-up spot. Mullett was fourth and Parro completed the top five. Nester was credited with 12th place and saw his division lead trimmed from 38 to 18 points over Sample, 478-460.

As a result of the race finish and the altercation’s subsequent suspensions between the involved drivers and crews for the rest of the season, Randy will inherent the points lead. We have three races left to finish the season out.

Welcome Race Fans,

RACE RESULTS – SUPER STREET RACE #6

Greetings Race Fans, JRN Racing had another good showing the past couple of races with more second place runs. Randy has run great races in the past couple. We almost took a win away on July 25th pulling within a car length. Our race on August 11, we had our best qualifying time all season, of 19.082, only to be bested by another competitor with a 19.078. We could not race that night because weather & rain cancelled racing before we ran.

Current Randy is solidly in second in the point’s standings, but unfortunately with Jamie not able to race until his car is finished, he is falling off in the point’s battle.

Jamie’s new car is well underway in construction. The chassis has been cleaned up and the body is ready to go one for roll cage installation. Progress has been affected by work obligations of chief mechanic and crew chief Doug. Our hope is to have it out by the seasons’ end. I know Jamie is chomping at the bit to get back in the car.

Our next race is this Saturday, August 22, 2009. We are racing at 5 pm this night because of the special night where the UARA Late Models will be running a 250 lap Race followed by racing again next weekend on August 29th. Please come and join us.

RACE RESULTS – SUPER STREET RACE #6

Welcome Race Fans,

RACE RESULTS – SUPER STREET RACE #6

Greetings Race Fans, JRN Racing had another good showing this past Saturday night with another second place run. Randy ran a great race, staying with the leader throughout the entire race than challenging the leader on the lap last for the win.

We spent most of the day during practice trying out a different set of tires. Those tires were older Hoosier tires we had, but wanted to try them out to see how they compared with the Goodyear’s we run. We were not pleased with the lap times as the car skidded sideways through the turns. Those old tires just did not have any grip left. So, for qualifying, we switched back to our Goodyear’s and immediately set an outside pole qualifying run with a lap time of 19.158 seconds.

During the race, Randy kept the pressure on the leader throughout the whole race. A couple of cautions late in the race set Randy up for a couple of attempts the take over the lead, but with so few laps left, just could not quite get there. Coming out of turn 4 on the last lap, the Leaders car stumbled a little, and Randy being right behind him gave him a nudge. This caused the leader to get somewhat sideways coming to the line, but Randy had backed off to keep from wrecking anyone and allowed the Leader to gather himself back up for the win. Randy crossed the line second, with no challenge from any cars behind.

The race recap from Langley’s website is as follows:

“Ryan Nester took the lead on the second circuit, then held off Randy Sample’s last-lap charge, and ran his unbeaten streak to six in the 50-lap Atlantic Power Sweeping Super Street feature.
Nester started on the pole, at 74.630 mph, but gave way to Sample, his front-row colleague, as the green flag waved. He rallied on the second lap, though, ducking under Sample at the entrance to Turn 1 and pulling ahead off the second corner.
Nester was clinging to a two-length advantage when the first caution flag flew on lap 15 for debris in Turn 3. Setting the lineup, Nester and Sample ran 1-2, followed by Randy Akers, Sean Calway and Jeramie Wood.
Back under green, Nester quickly regained his two-length edge, while Calway worked on Akers for third. By the halfway mark, Nester’s lead had grown to nearly half a straightaway.
Deeper in the field, Larry Venable, who got shuffled out of line in the early going, picked off Wood to move back into the top five. Meanwhile, Sample was beginning to close in on Nester.
The second caution flag appeared on lap 38 when Dale Parro spun off Turn 2. Lining up for the restart, a lapped machine separated Nester and Sample.
As the race resumed, Sample easily cleared the slower car and only lost one car-length to the leader. He was still within striking distance when Michael Farmer parted company with his right-rear wheel in Turn 3 to bring out the final caution flag at lap 44.
On the ensuing restart, Nester opened a two-length margin over Sample, who quickly narrowed the gap. As they received the white flag, Sample was within half a car-length of the leader’s rear bumper.
Exiting Turn 4 for the last time, Sample made contact with Nester and the leader’s car skittered sideways. In a display of good sportsmanship, Sample backed off and allowed Nester to gather his machine.
At the finish, Nester was the winner by 0.671-second — about two lengths — over Sample. Calway was third, followed by Akers and Jonathan Mullett.”

Our plan is to have to car ready to race within a month or so.

RACE RESULTS – SUPER STREET RACE #3, 4, & 5

6/28/2009

Well, it’s been a month since I have been able to report. I hope all is well with you. JRN Racing has had our share of successes and challenges since we last reported.

The third race of the season on May 16 was a challenging day for the team Dad and Crew Chief Doug had to work all day due to unforeseen issue so all the preps and practice were left up to the drivers Jamie & Randy and our crew Bryan and Jason to tend too. They had their challenges with a bad fuel pump on Jamie’s car and bent up exhaust pipe on Randy’s car. They worked diligently though to overcome these issues. Dad got to the race track with new fuel pump in hand, got it put on before the race, and both were able to race. Because of these issues, Jamie could not qualify and had to start in the back. Both cars ran good during the race with Randy ending up third, and Jamie finishing 11th.

The 4th race of the season was most challenging. Jamie’s car ran well in practice, and allowed us the chance work out the handling bugs. Randy again ripped the exhaust pipe off his car and so much of the day was spent repairing that. Even without practice, he qualified 2nd.

The start of the race was good with Randy quickly over the lead spot. The car was handling good and he was pulling away from the competition. Then the wreck happened at Lap 24. Brother Jamie was in mid pack, when two other cars got under him going into Turn 1. The two other cars had been battling each other. The lead car on his inside then bumped into Jamie halfway through the turn and sent Jamie straight to the outside wall. The car hit hard on the front right corner. Jamie was able to restart the car and drive it to the pits. This set up a restart were Randy lost the lead on the restart and could never re-catch back up. During up his tires, Randy was relegated to a 4th place finish.

A close look at Jamie’s revealed the chassis was bent in two places. Being concerned that we could never again get the car to handle correctly, we made the call to replace or build a new car. The following day we started our search, and quickly came across a rolling Monte Carlo chassis with roll cage provided in a box. The car was straight and the chassis looked good, so therefore we picked up the car.

The 5th race this season was a good day for us. Even though Randy was the only JRN Racing car on the track, he kept up the pace by qualifying on the pole with his fastest time recorded. The race started out with Randy taking the early lead, but a couple of caution early in the race allowed him to be overtaken after some bumping and competitors using the chrome horn. The car ran fine throughout the whole race, and Randy ended up second.

Our plan is to have to car ready to race within a month or so.

Our next race is Saturday, June 27, 2009. Racing starts at 7 pm.

Welcome Race Fans,

RACE RESULTS – SUPER STREET RACE #2 5/15/2009

Our second Super Street race of the season was almost as successful as the first. Jamie and Randy’s day started out great. The car’s were handling good and practice times were respectable. Randy qualified 3rd again and Jamie qualified 8th.

The start of the race was good with Randy quickly taking over the second spot. Starting on the inside always pays off. During the race, the cars & drivers drove well. Randy chased the leader the whole race, just about over taking him about a quarter of the way through the race. Jamie likewise had a respectable run. His car is doing better, but we still need to work on the handle. The car just does not want to turn good in the middle of the corner. Oh well, more work to make it right. Randy finished up second in the end, and Jamie sixth. Both cars are in one piece, so overall, a good night. Randy is solidly in 2nd place in points, and Jamie is in a 3 way tie for 3rd.

We have swapped the rear end in Jamie’s car over the off time. Hopefully the taller gear will help us be a little quicker coming out of the turn.

The following excerpt from Langley Speedways website provides a summary of the race.

Ryan Nester picked up his second win in as many starts in a 50-lapper for the Atlantic Power Sweeping Super Streets, leading the way from pole to checkers.
Nester nabbed the pole position with a 73.458-mph qualifying effort. Doug Woodyard was second-fastest, followed by Randy Sample, Larry Venable and John Foster.

As the event got going, Nester jumped out front and hauled the field off into Turn 1. Sample tagged along with the leader and gained the second position, while Woodyard dropped into third. Behind the top three, Foster and Venable dueled for fourth. Foster claimed the spot and left the lane open for Jeff Shannon and Jonathan Mullett, who also scooted past Venable.

At lap 5, Nester held a slim margin over Sample. Four lengths behind Sample, Woodyard led Foster and Shannon in a three-car pack.
The only caution flag waved on lap 7 to allow rescue personnel in the infield to respond to a call on the grandstand side.

As the race resumed, Nester quickly fashioned a three-length edge over Sample. Meanwhile, Shannon went after Foster for fourth, taking the spot on lap 9. Within a few circuits, Shannon had pulled away from Foster and was closing in on third-place Woodyard. On lap 17, Shannon ducked under Woodyard in Turn 4. He cleared Woodyard on lap 18 as they raced down the backstretch.

At the crossed flags, Nester’s lead had swelled to half a straightaway over Sample, while another full straightaway separated Sample and Shannon.

Over the second half of the race, Nester maintained that half-straightaway margin and won by 1.803 seconds over Sample. Shannon was third, followed by Woodyard and Foster. Foster, however, failed to clear the post-race inspection and was disqualified. Mullett took Foster’s place in the amended rundown.

Our next race is Saturday, May 16, 2009. Racing starts at 7 pm.

4/26/2009 - JRN RACING TAKES ON THE 1ST SUPER STREET RACE WITH A 2ND AND 4TH PLACE FINISHES.

4/26/2009

Welcome Race Fans,

RACE RESULTS – JRN RACING TAKES ON THE 1ST SUPER STREET RACE WITH A 2ND AND 4TH PLACE FINISHES.

Our first Super Street race of the season was this past Saturday. Jamie and Randy’s day started out great. The car’s were handling good and practice times were upfront. The rain got us mid afternoon and delayed racing for a short time hours. Randy qualified 3rd and Jamie qualified 6th.

The start of the race was little challenging. Both Jamie & Randy experienced wardrobe malfunctions in that neither had their racing gloves on for the start. This required them to come into the pits to get this corrected, but placed them at the back of the pack for the start. During the race, the cars & drivers drove well. The following excerpt from Langley Speedways website provides a summary of the race.

“Ryan Nester started on the pole, at 74.732 mph, and led all the way to win the 50-lap lid-lifter for the Atlantic Power Sweeping Super Streets.
As in the Modified event, missing gloves factored into the outcome as several drivers, including four of the top six, had to pull into the pits before the race to pick up the safety gear, losing their starting spots in the process.

When the green flag flew, Nester motored into the lead, followed by Doug Woodyard and Larry Venable. Before the first lap was completed, though, the caution flag waved as Randy Akers, Sean Calway and Jerry LaMontagne tied up in Turns 3 and 4. All three drivers were sidelined by the incident, a particularly tough pill for Akers to swallow, since he had to give up the outside pole before the start.

Back under green, Nester again jumped into the lead. Venable tagged along and took over second place, followed by John Foster, Randy Sample and a side-by-side battle between Rod Busitzky and Woodyard.

The second caution flag appeared on lap 4 when someone strayed a bit off-track in Turn 3 and kicked some water up onto the racing surface.
As the race resumed, Nester pulled out to a three-length advantage over Venable. Behind them, Busitzky snagged fifth from Woodyard and opened the door for Jamie Sample and Jonathan Mullett.

Lap 8 found the Sample brothers on the move as Randy took over third place from Foster, while Jamie scooted past Busitzky for fifth.

By lap 16, Randy Sample had closed in on Venable and was looking for the runner-up spot. With Sample’s #24 car filling his mirror, Venable began to close ground on the leader. At the halfway mark, Nester’s margin had been trimmed to little more than a car-length.
Randy Sample slipped by Venable for the second spot on lap 30 and quickly drove away. The swap of positions, however, allowed Nester to pad his lead. And, as the laps clicked off, the margin continued to swell.

At the finish, Nester was the winner by better than half a straightaway over Randy Sample. Foster was third, followed by Jamie Sample and Mullett. After running in the lead pack for most of the race, Venable faltered down the stretch, finally retiring to a 12th-place finish.”

Our next race is tonight. Racing starts at 7 pm.
